SIKKIM MANIPAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (Host Institution)

Sikkim Manipal University came into existence on November 15, 1992 as a result of the agreement signed between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation.

 

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology was established in 1997 as a constituent college of Sikkim Manipal University and is approved by AICTE. All Engineering departments of SMIT has accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and also certified by ISO 9001. SMIT has its own campus at Majitar, East Sikkim. The location of the institute is on the banks of river Teesta, surrounded by green hills and makes it an ideal place for learning.

 

Department of Chemistry was established in 1997 along with the Institute. The department has moved forward with the opening of M.Sc. in Chemistry from 2003 onwards. The department focuses on exposing the students to the latest development in the field of Chemistry and is endowed with vibrant and dynamic faculty, well qualified to impart high quality teaching. Scholarship to meritorious students of M.Sc. is awarded by SICPA India Ltd., a leading industry in Sikkim.

The Department has well-equipped lab with sophisticated equipments and also has ongoing research projects (AICTE, DST etc.) with number of Ph.D. students. Moreover it has a Society of Chemical Sciences (SCS) comprising of students and teachers. It organizes seminars, workshops, popular lectures in Science and Chemistry in particular regularly. The department has successfully organized RTC 2012 in collaboration with ACT during 23- 25 Jan 2012.

ASSOCIATION OF CHEMISTRY TEACHERS (ACT)

The Association of Chemistry Teachers (ACT) was launched in 2000 as a National body of Chemistry educators to promote excellence in Chemistry Education. (Regn. No. Government of Maharashtra, Mumbai 922, 2010, G. B. B. S. D. dated 08-04-2010, website: www.associationofchemistryteachers.org)

ACT brings together college and university teachers, scientists and researchers for conducting chemistry related activities. Since its inception, ACT has worked tirelessly to strengthen chemistry education in India and to motivate students to pursue chemistry as a career.

ACT has organized several activities to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry (IYC) 2011. The ACT newsletter is available online on the ACT website.
